My parents got involved with Jehovah’s Witnesses when I was about 5 years old. Life changed dramatically for myself and my younger brother and sister. In retrospect I believe my parents were both severely damaged children who never dealt with their childhood trauma. Instead they embraced the conservative, yet unconventional, beliefs of Jehovah’s Witnesses, putting us on a distorted path to survive in the world.
Both of them have died in the past few years and even though our relationship was fraught with estrangement, I still grieve their deaths.
Here is a short poem I wrote, that helps me cope with that grief. I hope it may help other ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Poem for Leo & Sally - Sending Love to Beyond
You are
back
in the arms of
chaos.
Free,
to be
reborn,
to rebound,
rebirth,
dreams,
desires,
loves.
Find
joy,
forget
revenge.
Light up the sky.
Soar.
